The force of the vehicle moving forward then stopping can cause the head to strike a stationary object such as the windshield or steering wheel. Flying objects can pierce the skull with the momentum of the collision.

The US Department of Health Services provides a list of signs and symptoms of a TBI from mild to severe. Keep in mind not all people lose consciousness when they have a TBI, though it is one of the many symptoms to look for. A moderate to severe TBI can cause convulsions, coordination loss, slurred speech, pupil enlargement, headaches that stay or worsen and tingling or numbness in the limbs.
Even mild symptoms can cause nausea, ear ringing, mood changes, sound and light sensitivity, bad tastes, dizziness, headaches, memory trouble and sleep habit changes. A person experiencing any symptoms of a TBI should seek medical attention immediately especially following a motor vehicle accident or other head trauma.
